July 12, 2008 vs. Prison City Derby Dames BAKERSFIELD, CA Bakersfield [116] Prison City [99]
Recap by Penny Pincher | BRG News Service The Bakersfield Rollergirls held off a Prison City Derby Dames team loaded with talented volunteer skaters on Saturday, July 12 at Rollerama and brought home their second win of the season 116 to 99 by matching the Dames hit for punishing hit. Several skaters were injured during the floor-damaging, trash-talking bout. The most devastating injury was a broken right ankle suffered in final minutes of the game by the Rollergirls Ima Blowbya, who will be out for at least six weeks. The Rollergirls opened up an early lead behind the spirited jamming of Tonka Toy, who led the team to victory with 51 points in 13 jams. Ima Blowbya added another 24 points in 11 jams before her painful injury.
The win was Bakersfield’s second win of the season. The capacity crowd at Rollerama was treated to the Rollergirl’s first at home victory, the second in a row after their June 14 win over the Inland Empire Derby Divas, 121 to 49. The Rollergirls held a lead through most of the first of two periods, thanks to a brutal defensive effort led by Dred Blocker and backed up by Banshee Recital and Spider Cricket, among others. Bakersfield’s defensive effort was especially impressive because the Derby Dames had called in ringers from other leagues, including Krissy Krash and Bombshell Betty from the L.A. Derby Dolls banked-track team. The defense was helped by good offense as Bakersfield’s jammers won lead jammer in an impressive nine of the first half’s 20 jams. Still, the Rollergirls held off the Dames until Selacidal turned in a 10 point 16th jam and took the lead for the first time, 46 to 45 with less than seven minutes remaining in the first half. The first of nine lead changes didn’t last long. Bakersfield took revenge on the very next jam when Miss Taken won lead jammer, scored two points and called the jam before the Dames could respond. Again, the one-point lead didn’t last. After the 18th jam, the Dames were ahead again, 50 to 47. Ima Blowbya took the lead back in the 19th jam, and the Rollergirls held momentum going into halftime, with Banshee Recital adding two more points in the 20th jam to make the score 54 to 51. Bakersfield again led through the first jams a wild second half until the Derby Dames tied it up in the 25th jam at 59 all. Sticki Vicki seized Bakersfield’s lead back with a 5-point lead 26th jam with less than 23 minutes left in the second half. The Rollergirls held that lead until the Derby Dames in the 30th jam, 76 to 75. Ima Blowbya tied the bout again in the 31st jam, and Bakersfield surged ahead with a very physical 5-point lead 32nd jam by Dred Blocker. The Derby Dames punishing play kept it close, but they could never quite catch the Rollergirls, who rode a 5-0 35th jam by Sticki Vicki and a backbreaking 8-0 38th jam by Tonka Toy to victory.
